spacerTexas Tech is a Tier One University.

WHAT IS TIER ONE?

Tier One is a term used to describe institutions having academic excellence, world-class research and an exceptional student body; it is used interchangeably with “national research university.”

THE SIGNIFICANCE FOR TTU AND FOR TEXAS

  • Tier One universities create an educated workforce and produce research that provides solutions to complex issues facing the state, nation and the world.
  • Pennsylvania, with a population of about half that of Texas, has four. California with nine and New York with seven, are far ahead. Texas must have more Tier One institutions.

FACT: The state of Texas leaves $3.7 billion in federal research and venture capital on the table annually because existing Tier One institutions don’t have sufficient capacity to conduct the additional research those dollars would produce.

FACT: Each year more than 10,000 Texas high school graduates attend doctoral-granting institutions in other states because Texas does not have enough Tier One choices. This “brain drain” has increased 54 percent in the last six years.

The Tier One designation is only a first step in the journey. Texas Tech’s ultimate goal is to become one of the nation’s truly great research institutions; a university that conducts research that changes lives, that educates students who are globally competitive, and drives the formation of new businesses that significantly enhance the local and state economy.
